So it’s day two of 2015. We’ve all made our new years’ resolutions, whether you wrote ’em down or just noodled ’em out while recovering from that dance ’til your dizzy NYE party – yup that was me. Had a fuckin’ blast.
I’ve got the usuals: exercise more, eat better, write every single day, no exceptions. But the thing is, I’m already doing all of that. I was – gulp – grown, and I didn’t wait until a specific date to start doing what I have to do to live a better life. But here’s one that I came up with in the past few days: Show Don’t Tell.
After I posted my latest release Ineffable I looked at a few of my reviews. I don’t do this often, ‘cuz let’s face it. Everyone’s not gonna like you, and when you read the harsh things those folks say, it stings like a bitch. I saw “show don’t tell” more than once. And whether the reviewers were in a shit mood that day or just don’t appreciate my genius-in-progress, when you see something over and over it’s not gonna kill you to listen.
I’m big on self-improvement – you should see the huge pile of clothes I’m compiling to give away in my quest for minimalism; that it’s sitting in various patches of floor throughout my house is another issue – and my writing is a key piece of that. So I’m inviting you all to tell me what you think it means to show, not tell.
I’ve started a hashtag on Twitter #showdonttell, and I’ve also kicked the idea out to solicit input from my peeps on Facebook. Lemme know what you think, okay?
